Comcast's Impact on Hulu -- With or Without a Stake in NBC Universal

Comcast is poised to purchase a 51% controlling stake in media/content giant NBC Universal, as I have written about the last couple days.

This is a big deal for Comcast and the future of online video in general, and Hulu in particular -- since Hulu is a joint venture of NBC Universal and News Corp.

With or without ownership in NBC Universal, Comcast's impact on Hulu and the overall Hulu experience already has been substantial. The cable giant's 800 pound gorilla influence has significantly pared back the amount of content (TV shows) available on the site. In other words, Hulu already is not what it was and, ultimately, Comcast's actions -- and those of other cable companies (and hence, the media companies that need them) -- will marginalize the current power position held by the company.
