Rupert Murdoch's right-hand man at News Corp. for nearly 20 years, Peter Chernin, is now former president and COO after contractual negotiations broke down. Not clear at this point who instigated what, but it is clear that this is major news in the media and digital media business worlds. Chernin, among other things, was instrumental in helping to drive News Corp. to its digital media leadership position amongst major media companies via its Fox Interactive Media division -- which is the place-holder most notably for MySpace. While this news is not really surprising upon further reflection, it initially caught me by surprise when it crossed my blackberry tonight. Chernin is virtually synonymous with News Corp. And, Rupert will find his Fox empire to be a very different place without him.
