Yahoo! has achieved the trifecta of related posts this week -- this time, Steve Ballmer of Microsoft has tapped 10 year Yahoo! veteran Qi Lu as president of its online services group in its attempts to make some headway against Google's dominant searching and advertising business. Lu was Yahoo!'s executive VP of engineering for its search and advertising technology group, and his hiring fills an important void in Microsoft's executive ranks. Speculation (The Wall Street Journal and others) is that Ballmer's move to hire Lu could be part of a near-term effort to acquire Yahoo!'s search and advertising business and would fast-track technical integration.
As I indicated in my posts earlier this week, don't rule out a near-term and renewed play by Ballmer to acquire some or all of Yahoo!'s business.
