Apple's Open House -- Developers Now Welcome to the iPhone

In a surprising turn-around from Apple following its recent PR backlash, Steve Jobs announced yesterday that Apple now will open up the iPhone to third party software. The company will release an SDK ("software development kit") by February 2008 that will enable developers to build other applications for the iPhone.

Is this a new kinder, gentler Apple that is changing its ways in response to the needs of its customers? Or, has Apple just faced the reality that such "openness" is necessary to stay competitive in the market to define technology standards for the massive mobile phone market?
