Okay, Ken Camp, Benjamin Higginbotham, Dameon Welch-Abernathy (PhoneBoy), and Jon Arnold -- you are now officially IT!

Universal Music Strips Off DRM for Online Sales -- But Excludes iTunes

Hoping to blunt the continuing sales slide plaguing the music industry, and in a historic move, the world's largest music company -- Universal Music Group -- announced that it is following EMI's lead and stripping off copy protections ("DRM" -- digital rights management) from its songs sold online. But, in an interesting move that many pundits claim amounts to a snub against Apple's iTunes store -- and iTunes continuing stranglehold on and continuing dominance in the digital music downloads market -- iTunes will get the benefit of Universal's new move to sell its music in the unrestricted MP3 format.

Rather, Universal announced that its retail partners for this new "experiment" -- officially slated to last only for a "limited time"(until the end of January 2008) -- include online retailers Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Amazon. iTunes, instead, will be a "control group" in Universal's new experiment -- where the company claims that it will measure and compare download rates and piracy rates across the experimental group vis-a-vis iTunes (the control group member).
