As reported in today's Wall Street Journal, and in response to the continuing power and clout of Apple's iTunes service, MTV will announce today that it is merging its digital music offerings into those of RealNetworks via a joint venture. The companies will host a 5 pm EDT/2 pm PDT conference call today to formally announce details of the relationship.
Real, of course, operates the Rhapsody subscription digital media service. This announcement apparently will mark the end of MTV's "Urge" branded digital music service. Verizon Wireless will supply mobile distribution for the joint venture, in response to Apple's partnership with AT&T.
